Place of myths, history and stories.
The Waldviertel is the north-western part of the Austrian federal state of Lower Austria. In the south, the Danube forms the border with Lower Austria's Mostviertel region. Clockwise from south-west to east, the neighbouring regions are the Upper Austrian Mühlviertel, the Czech South Bohemia and the Lower Austrian Weinviertel with the striking Manhartsberg (537 m). Around 1400 ponds, bizarre rock formations, pristine natural forests and moors characterise the landscape of the Waldviertel. Here you can recharge your batteries on a hike in unspoilt nature or by visiting calming places of power. There are a multitude of castles, abbeys and palaces to discover.
